The only song which actively entices adults to sing the words ‘parum-pa-pum-pum’ (and which is only saved from being the nadir of David Bowie’s recording career by the existence of ‘The Laughing Gnome’). And a little boy coming along and whacking a drum just as Mary has got the baby off to sleep – hmmm, will he really be all that popular?

This was voted the worst carol of all time by readers of the Chicago Tribune. ‘With a musical range of exactly seven notes,’ said one reader, ‘and a scale-like melody that only a first-year piano student could love…this song is the musical equivalent of watching paint dry.’ Other comments included: ‘embarrassingly mawkish’, ‘lugubrious and schmaltzy’ and ‘repetitive and mind-numbing’. (Harsh words indeed, from a country that was quite happy to give us Billy Ray Cyrus.) Another agonised correspondent noted: ‘Even when sung by children accompanied by an actual little boy playing drums, it’s interminable.’ Surely that ‘even’ should read ‘especially’?
